How to Work With Your Coach on a Zoom Call
Working with a coach on Zoom is simple, practical, and surprisingly fast when you know what to expect. Below is the exact structure I use with clients so you get real progress from the first session.
Before the call — quick prep that saves time
- Complete a short intake form: 5 minutes of context (goals, challenges, recent examples) helps me tailor the session.
- Send a clip (optional): a 60–120 second video of you speaking or presenting gives me a starting point for observation.
- Set a single goal: pick one outcome for the session (calm nerves, a strong opening, confident delivery) so we stay focused.
- Find a quiet space & good camera angle: eye level, simple background, decent lighting, headphones if possible.
Session length & frequency
Typical session: 50 minutes. That’s long enough for coaching, practice, and clear next steps. Common cadence: weekly or fortnightly for rapid progress. Monthly works for maintenance and longer-term projects.
The session structure — what actually happens
My sessions follow a tight, repeatable format so every minute counts.
- Quick check-in (3–5 mins): how you’re feeling, what worked or didn’t since last time, any urgent events coming up.
- Goal review (2–3 mins): confirm the single focus for this session so we’re aligned.
- Demonstration or role model (3–5 mins): I show a short example or we analyze a short clip together to set a benchmark.
- Active practice / role-play (20–25 mins): you perform short exercises or micro-presentations. I pause, give targeted feedback, then we repeat. This is where growth happens fast.
- Technique & mindset coaching (10–12 mins): hands-on instruction: voice, breath, posture, phrasing, and the exact thought-shifts that stop nerves from sabotaging performance.
- Clear home practice (3–5 mins): one or two focused drills to do before the next session and measurable goals to track.
Typical tools & methods used
- Video playback + timestamped feedback
- Short, repeatable vocal and breathing drills
- Role-play and simulated Q&A
- Mindset anchors & quick mental routines to calm nerves
- Script editing for clarity and impact
Coaching is active: most of the session is doing — not talking. You’ll leave with practical changes you can feel immediately.
Tech tips so nothing gets in the way
- Use a wired connection if possible or stay close to your router.
- Turn off notifications and close other apps that use the camera or mic.
- Use headphones with a mic to reduce echo and improve clarity.
What I expect from clients
- Willingness to try things that feel slightly uncomfortable (that’s where change happens).
- Consistent short practice between sessions — 10–20 minutes, 3–5 times a week.
- Honest feedback: tell me what worked and what didn’t so I can adapt.
Typical outcomes after 4 sessions
- Noticeably stronger opening and closing in your presentations
- Reduced nervousness and clearer, more confident voice
- Simple routines that keep you calm before and during performance
- Bespoke scripts or frameworks you can reuse (talk openings, transitions, Q&A)
Payments, scheduling, cancellations
